It was in 1947 that George Nelson discovered a self webbing material used to preserve ships in New York. He became convinced that the translucent material would be perfect to create bubble lamps which were organic in design. He made a metal frame, tracked down the source of the webbing material and then created a large glowing sphere and named it the Bubble Lamp. Nelson made many variations to the original shape. These include Saucer, Ball, Cigar, Apple, Pear, Criss Cross, Lantern and Propeller.
